Andalusite is a mineral that belongs to the aluminosilicate group and is one of three polymorphs. Orthorhombic. Colour, pink or grey. H = 7.5, G = 3.2. Andalusite occurs in contact metamorphosed shales and slates. Crystals are prismatic and have a nearly square transverse section. The variety chiastolite contains inclusions of carbon (Fig. 4.34b). Two other forms of Al2OSiO4 are sillimanite (formed at high temperature as in an aureole) and kyanite (a pale blue mineral formed under high stress and moderate temperature).

Andalusite Al2SiO5 is one of the kyanite-form minerals with significant alumina Al2O3 content (62.92 wt.%) [1, 2]. After being heated above 1350°C, andalusite begins to transform to acicular mullite, which is known for its excellent characteristics such as strong fire resistance, slag resistance, high mechanical strength, and good chemical stability [3–5]. Consequently, andalusite is widely used in the production of high-alumina refractory, ceramic materials, and other industrial applications [5,6]. It can be used in the manufacture of silicon–aluminum alloys, and radar devices [7].
