Solution — I went to a large hardware and building supplies store and walked the aisles while mulling over the problem. Eventually I spotted a small vise with a suction base that would attach to any work surface and could hold one end of the wire stripper. Securing one arm of the wire stripper would cut the exertion in half. I also remembered I had a short length of PVC pipe at home, which could be placed over the other arm of the wire stripper to serve as an extended lever.

Fabrication involves three steps. Firstly, the single-mode fiber is selected to be the main body of the sensor. 1.0 × 104 μm of cladding is removed carefully by a wire stripper, which is subsequently wiped clean by lens paper dipped with alcohol. Secondly, the fiber is bent symmetrically, and the intersection is fixed firmly to form tail ring. Thirdly, two fibers are held close to each other on the support platform. After placing a Bunsen burner under the fibers, they are slowly pulled manually gently over the flame. Our subsequent discussion on taper further indicates that fibers should be pulled as horizontally as possible, thereby reducing the loss of the light during its propagation in MFC. Ultimately, two separate fibers are fused together, as shown in Figure 2.

The experimental set-up for temperature measurement is shown in Figure 8. To fabricate the SMSMS structure, the coating of the single mode fiber is removed with a wire stripper, the fiber tips are flattened with a knife (ct-50, Fujikura), and the fibers are fused (S179C, Furukawa). During the fusion, the built-in procedure (single mode-multimode, SM-MM) is used, and each fiber was washed with ethanol before fusion.
