A sample size of 140 mm · 70 mm · 10 mm is recommended to ensure structural integrity for additional treatments, Figures A1 and A4 illustrate the process. After sizing, the samples were flattened with a specimen grinding machine with automatic lateral displacement of the grinding head (Controls 55-C0201/CZ model), the grinding machine wears down the surface where a rotational controller fix the grinding head depth. This process continues until achieving a flatness between 0.03 mm and 0.10 mm, measured with a Mitutoyo thickness gauge and a Mitutoyo calibrated granite surface plate model 517-105, Figure A2 demonstrates the process followed. Specifically, each sample is placed on the Mitutoyo calibrated surface and measured with the gauge before and after the grinding process to assure the correct flatness and parallelism. Finally, the samples are progressively polished to the desired nominal grit (120 or 320, as per Table 2) by using a clamped sander machine as indicated in Figure A3.
