The Research and Design Process
Published in Krystina Castella, Designing for Kids, 2018
Use secondary research as a platform to guide any subsequent primary research you may conduct. It also may be the only available source of specific pieces of information for you to use. Learn about kids through the news profiles, magazine articles, blogs and social networks, and case studies. Analyze behaviors and the effect of the cultural context. Look into opportunities for innovations. Read academic journals, books and scientific reports. These provide the facts and figures of your challenge with data and most up-to-date theories. Look beyond that page and interpret. When using data from secondary research, compare the sources. Are they consistent? If not, dive deeper. Then make sure to verify the credibility of the information by checking the appendix and references. If it is credible, analyze the data to seek actionable findings to move the project forward. What are the implications of the research? What will this research study lead to in the future? Are there common stories people tell? What does the data suggest?
How Do You Assess the Chances of Venture Success?

There are two major classifications of research: primary and secondary. Primary researchis the process of collecting original data by the entrepreneur. It is common to talk to industry experts and target market customers, to possibly use a questionnaire, and to use focus groups. Secondary researchis the process of finding data already collected by others. You use the library and Internet data to test for feasibility. Both types of research are used by entrepreneurs to test the feasibility of a business model in order to decrease the chances of business failure, because conducting research does lead to increased performance.6

To the extent that they collect data at all, there are two ways to get data. Primary research occurs when the organization gathers its own data. Secondary research is the use of data collected by others. In the media industries, market research typically begins with the analysis of data collected via secondary research - census, government-funded economic reports, and commercial data sources and market reports, such as credit card data or viewership data.
Fashion design students’ self-evaluation of usage, benefits, and attitudes toward using design research sketchbook skills: a scaffolded pedagogical approach
Published in International Journal of Fashion Design, Technology and Education, 2022
Secondary research involves collecting material created by others, which might be found in books or on the internet. ‘An activity as enjoyable and relaxing as flicking through a fashion magazine and tearing out pages of interest can be considered sound secondary research’ (Mbonu, 2014, p. 20). Secondary research helps broaden the scope of any investigations by enabling the creator to access objects, places, and facts that are not readily available to view first-hand (Khar & Ghosh, 2018). Secondary research involves collecting informative material which is already created by others. Other people’s findings can be found in books, the internet, journals, and magazines, allowing seeing and reading about things that are no longer around or not easily accessible (Mckelvey & Munslow, 2011). It is important to analyse and distil the appropriate information for the project (Khar & Ghosh, 2018).
