For any project manager from the company in Example 18.2 that requests peer consultation, the company will help arrange it and cover the consultants’ expenses for travel and time off. The consultation process emphasizes questioning, analysis, and feedback. The peer consultants offer guidance, but the project team makes its own decisions.23

Feedback from the results of the parallel device design process was solicited from the instructors. This feedback can be seen in Table 1. It was suggested that adding a ‘game’ aspect to a device could improve students’ engagement levels when using a device. The weighted evaluation matrix identified that the ‘braille letter, word maker’ would be the best design to prototype; however, the semi-structured interviews suggested that a ‘braille pegboard’ was the better choice as it simulated the egg carton/paint palette learning tool. The first aspect in learning how to read is the ability to identify letters and short words. While the ‘braille letter, word maker’ had a similar goal, the tactile element of the ‘braille pegboard’ was more similar to the methods currently used which would increase acceptance. This also had the added benefit of allowing independent interaction through auditory feedback. The consultation process highlights the importance of ensuring that the end-user is involved throughout the design process. Many engineers neglect to continuously engage the end-users throughout the process resulting in abandonment of assistive devices (Phillips & Zhao, 1993). The co-design process resulted in the selection of the braille pegboard as being the most useful implementation of a device to enable an individual being to learn how to read in braille.
