Raptor codes

Raptor codes are a type of fountain code that have low decoding complexity and achieve error correction performance close to that of an ideal forward error correction (FEC) code. They are known for having the least encoding and decoding complexity among all fountain codes, making them computationally efficient. An extension of LT-codes, Raptor codes are a class of fountain codes with constant encoding and linear decoding cost. Compared to LT-codes, they achieve their computational superiority at the expense of an asymptotically higher overhead, although in most practical settings Raptor codes outperform LT-codes in every aspect. In fact, for constant overhead ɛ one can construct families of Raptor codes with encoding cost O(log(1/ɛ)), decoding cost O(k log(1 /ɛ)), and a decoding error probability that asymptotically decays inversely polynomial in k [7].

Among all fountain codes, Raptor codes are the ones having the least encoding and decoding complexity. Raptor codes were invented by Shokrollahi (2006) and have been used in standards such as the 3GPP Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) standard for broadcast transmission including streaming services (Gao et al., 2013), the DVB-IPTV for offering TV services over IP (IETF, 2018) and the DVB-H IP Datacasting for offering IP services over DVB (Mladenov et al., 2011). The most powerful variant of Raptor codes is called RaptorQ codes (Luby et al., 2011). They support larger block sizes and have better coding efficiency than traditional Raptor codes.
