Rack unit

A rack unit (RU) is a standardized unit of measure used to determine the vertical space required for equipment that is mounted within an equipment enclosure or rack. The rack height is mostly expressed in rack units (U); one rack unit (1 U) corresponds to a height of 44.45 mm. The same applies to network equipment. Depending on the number of interfaces, a switch can be 1 U high or higher. The same applies to routers and other hardware pieces (patch panel, UPS, etc.).

As uplinks are clearly the focus of attention in this book, this section will be the most descriptive. Where possible, we will give some idea of the size of each of the pieces of equipment in the uplink, expressed in terms of how much space is occupied in equipment racks. An ‘equipment rack’ is case or unit that conforms to certain dimensional standards, and equipment that fits into such a rack are measured in terms of height in ‘rack-height units’ (RU), where 1 RU is equal to 1.75 in. (44.5 mm) height (see Table 3.1).

The data center under consideration is a 355.2 m2 facility with the racks arranged in clusters as shown in Figure 12. Rack unit is a unit of measure for rack mounted equipment. Server racks are usually 1.98 m high, 0.91 m long and 0.61 m wide and are divided into 42 units. One server unit has a height of approximately 0.045 m and width of 0.48 m.
