Question development is a key stage of the research process as it informs all subsequent research stages including methodology selection, data analysis and data visualisation or reporting (Bryman, 2007). Questions in performance analysis should be framed around performance indicators specific to the sport. A performance indicator is a selection or combination of variables that aims to define an aspect of performance (Hughes & Bartlett, 2002). Performance indicators or outcome measures can be used to assess an individual, team or elements of a team. They are broadly divided into two categories: technical and tactical. Technical measures quantify movement such as kinematics and kinetics. Tactical measures are parameters that describe match play or race pacing. Each of these categories can be used separately or together to convey important information surrounding an athletes’ performance.
Characteristics of Business Processes

Performance indicators for the assessment of process performance have to be defined in order for process performance to be determined accurately and must be continuously monitored by the process manager. The definition of a performance indicator can be based on the company’s strategy, business process objectives, and/or strategic success factors. For example, a financial services provider may state as a business process objective the desire to secure “an increase in productivity by means of faster service provisioning.” In this situation, in order to determine the level of goal attainment, two performance indicators can be identified: time (as an input factor) and service quantity (as an output factor).
Toolkit for Assessing and Monitoring Leadership and Safety Culture

Indicators should be monitored for change. When analyzing a performance indicator, review the performance objective and attribute being measured. Ask yourself how the data informs the objective and associated attributes. The evaluation of performance indicators may show the need to dig deeper on a particular topic or may result in recommendations for improvement, including the type of performance indicators and the kind of information they might reveal.

Once the areas requiring attention are selected, performance indicators are defined. They are shown in Exhibit 11. It is important to mention that there is no method to define performance indicators, but some considerations that have to be taken into account to define them. The indicators have to measure the degree achievement of the objectives; they have to be understood in the same way by everyone and they must have a unique value (the value of a performance indicator should not depend on the person who makes the calculation).
