Horsepower is a unit of power. The horsepower listed on the motor nameplate is known as nameplate horsepower (nhp). Brake horsepower (bhp) is not listed on the nameplate but it is an important calculated number which gives the total horsepower applied to the drive shaft of any piece of rotating equipment. Brake horsepower is always less that nameplate horsepower. Phase (PH) is the number of separate voltages supplying the motor (single-phase or three-phase).

Most notably, bringing these two power plants together has clear efficiency advantages. Internal combustion engines are sized to produce needed power for acceleration, hill climbing, and overtaking, which means the majority of the time the engine is significantly oversized for the needs of the car. So, while only 30 horsepower or so are needed to keep a car cruising down the road, the typical engine has about five times that amount of power available. By integrating an electric motor that can provide a torque boost when needed, engines can be downsized significantly, as they no longer need to be sized for the maximum torque conditions.

The manufacturer provided data for this engine running on gasoline. Which showed the engine producing a maximum horsepower of 128 HP (95.5 kW) at 5,250 rpm and a maximum torque of 194 Nm at 4,000 rpm. For this study, it was found that the gasohol 91 had a maximum horsepower of 103.5 HP (77.5 kW) at 4,600 rpm and a maximum torque of 176 Nm at 2,400 rpm, see Figure 5. This represents a fall in horsepower of 19% and a fall in torque of 9% from the manufacturer provided data. This could be because of different environmental and test rig conditions or slightly different fuel grades used.

Figure 3 shows the power value defined as the shaft power output (Ne). Power is the capacity of an engine to produce useful work per unit of time, expressed in horsepower (hp). Engine power measurement involves electric voltage (V) and current (I) from the generator, driven by engine shaft rotation expressed in watt. Measurements are made using a load on the generator, with the shaft automatically loaded. Power can be calculated with the equation Ref. (Heywood 1988):
