The Toolbox offers quite a number of design tools for bearings, bolts and screws, jig bushings, keys, nuts, O-rings, and power transmission elements (chain sprockets, gears, timing belt pulleys, retaining rings, structural members, and washers), as shown in Figures 13.16 through 13.33. These design tools assist the design engineers in performing their work more effectively and efficiently.

Design is essential for engineering education and practice (Crismond & Adams, 2012; Daly et al., 2012), but it is hard to learn and arguably harder to teach (Dym et al., 2005). Computer-aided design (CAD) is a standard design tool used in engineering practice and by students. While CAD is often taught in the undergraduate engineering curriculum, generative design is not. Generative design is an emerging technology that allows designers to iteratively explore design solutions with the aid of AI-driven software in a CAD platform (Chester, 2007). This paradigm shift in design methods entails a fundamental change of mindset for design thinking that must be addressed in the engineering education of the future workforce. By preparing students for this shift, our ongoing efforts in fostering GD-based design thinking will contribute to the core research on the Future of Work at the Human-Technology Frontier, one of NSF’s 10 Big Ideas, from the field of engineering.
Optimizing urban layouts through computational generative design: density distribution and shape optimization

Computational design tools assist designers and architects to make better decisions in a shorter time. This research presented a new method to find superior solutions for generating more efficient urban layouts. The objective functions; increasing solar radiation received and increasing the wall distances were chosen according to the case study demands and characteristics. It was also intended to develop a new methodology that provides more freedom for shaping plans in the residential blocks according to the defined objectives and to be applied in the field. Hence, in future research and according to the chosen site, more or different design and development objectives can be defined to achieve more significant results.
Toolkits, cards and games – a review of analogue tools for collaborative ideation

At a broad level, we define a design tool as ’something that provides materials with which a designer interacts to create a situation that ‘talks back to the designer’ (Schoen 1983).’ (Yamamoto and Nakakoji 2005). More specifically, we refer to analogue tools (excluding digital tools such as technical toolkits or graphics software). Moreover, we specify tailored analogue tools, or those which have been designed specifically to support some aspect of design ideation, thus, excluding general-purpose tools such as pen and paper.
