Gutmann et al. [3] propose a very generic method, called Vector Field SLAM (VF-SLAM), for modeling continuous vector fields in the SLAM context. The method utilizes bilinear interpolation with an automatically updating coarse (1–2 m) regular grid. As an example, they use infrared-based vector field in a small 2D planar environment (). Approximately decimeter accuracy is achieved. The method is later evaluated in home-sized environments with area of [18].
