There are multiple handset OSs in the market, and the following are some of the popular ones: Mac OS: This is a UNIX-based OS. Different flavors of this OS are available from Apple. For Mac desktops and laptops, the Mac OS Snow Leopard is popular, iPod Touch uses OS X, and iPhone uses iOS.Android: This is a Linux-based OS from Google. This is an open-source OS, unlike most others in the market. Although the project is open source, it has powerful features that make Android one of the most popular mobile OSs. The entire source code, including network interface and telephony stacks, has been published by Google under the Apache License.Windows CE: Windows Embedded Compact is an OS from Microsoft for embedded devices. Windows CE is not limited to use in mobile handsets. It finds use in several embedded systems and is the core for Windows Mobile OS, which is a more specialized version for use in mobile handsets.Windows Mobile: As the name suggests, this is an OS from Microsoft. It finds extensive use in enterprise mobile handsets, developed specifically for rugged use. The ability to interface easily with Microsoft back-end systems makes this OS quite popular in enterprises. Documents developed using Microsoft applications can also be downloaded and viewed by installing Microsoft packages in the Windows Mobile OS.BlackBerry OS: This OS from RIM is specifically for BlackBerry handsets. A desktop package is provided by RIM to synchronize BlackBerry handsets with data in desktops. The OS supports multitasking and also provides support for input devices, such as track wheel, track ball, and track pad, which are used in BlackBerry handsets.Symbian OS: Symbian OS is an open-source OS. It is maintained by Nokia. As one of the leaders in handset manufacturing, Nokia was able to easily popularize Symbian OS as a successor of the Nokia Series 60 (S60). The code for this OS was published under the Eclipse Public License.Others: There are several other mobile OSs such as Palm OS or Garnet OS, developed by Palm Inc., Bada OS, developed by Samsung Electronics, and MeeGo, which is an open-source Linux-based OS.

The CPU of the system is located in the Master Control Unit that is a Real-Time machine based on a Windows Embedded Compact 7 platform. In practice, the Master Unit is a special PC provided with an ISA bus, a programmable clock board, and a digital input-output board. Classically, an ISA bus is essential to pass a high priority interrupt (interrupt 10) directly to the main processor, without resorting to a dedicated BIOS. Even though all the manufacturers do not produce any more motherboards with ISA buses, some of them still do it, ensuring compatibility with recent processors and RAM memories and thus allowing high computational performances. Figure 4b shows the core of the ELSAREC master: the motherboard provided with ISA bus (MB960F) with 3rd Gen Intel® Core™ i5 processor, FC9011 board compatible with EtherCAT drivers, programmable clock board PCI 1735 U and an ISA adapter to pass the clock generated by PCI 1735 U directly to central CPU (through the blue cable). Finally, the two clock plugs (Clock IN – Clock OUT) are essential to share the same clock between different synchronized masters.
