An Evaluation Model of Smart Speaker Design
Published in Tugrul Daim, Marina Dabić, Yu-Shan Su, The Routledge Companion to Technology Management, 2023
A smart speaker is, to put it simply, a speaker that serves as the fundamental vessel for providing access to artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things to serve consumers. What is different about smart speakers is the interactivity. In addition, smart speakers are currently the only consumer electronics devices that use only natural language for interactions and operations and such applications are very innovative.
Users’ Cognitive and Affective Response to the Risk to Privacy from a Smart Speaker

In the past five years, smart speakers such as Amazon Echo have a growing presence in consumers’ homes with a form of voice command system through microphone and speaker. Smart speakers provide users a hand-free interface that can detect user’s voice and can offer information via audio speaker, such as news, weather, traffic information, as well as playing music, ordering pizza, and controlling smart home devices. Besides, smart speakers begin to offer combined services with third-party services such as carsharing (e.g., Uber or Grab) and voice banking (e.g., Capital One) to add value for users (Benlian et al., 2019). It is reported that 157 million smart speakers are used by US households and existing smart speaker households have purchased the devices from 1.7 to 2.6 between 2017 and 2019 (Edison Research and NPR Report, 2020). Despite their advantages and market growth, smart speakers can threaten users’ privacy because of their ‘always-on’ feature in private spaces. Correspondingly, smart speakers bring about consumers’ questions such as what data is collected, how collected data will be utilized, how to secure the collected data (Lau et al., 2018), including law enforcement (Jackson & Orebaugh, 2018). Thus, smart speaker service providers encounter a challenge between safeguarding users’ information privacy and offering personalized services (Hatmake, 2017).
My Smart Speaker is Cool! Perceived Coolness, Perceived Values, and Users’ Attitude toward Smart Speakers

A smart speaker is a type of wireless speaker and voice command device with an integrated virtual assistant that offers interactive actions and hands-free activation with the help of one “hot word” (or several “hot words”). According to Smith (2018), it is defined as “a wireless device with artificial intelligence that can be activated through voice command” (p. 1). Smart speakers are becoming a fundamental hub or platform, particularly in houses recently (D. Kim et al., 2018; Park et al., 2018). One of the fundamental aims of these devices is to make search more comfortable, faster, and convenient (D. Kim et al., 2018).
The Unit and Size of Information Supporting Auditory Feedback for Voice User Interface

Conversations with Voice User Interface (VUI) systems using AI are no longer special. In 2020, there were 87.7 million people in the United States with at least one smart speaker (Voicebot.ai, 2020b) and 129.7 million people with in-car voice assistants (Voicebot.ai, 2020a). Smart speakers can facilitate users’ ability to get information (news, weather, encyclopedia, etc.), play music, and control household devices regardless of place (home, car, office, etc.).
