The installed measuring devices collect data logs from the main power circuitry connector, as well as from individual devices. The main power data involve the aggregated electric current and voltage waveforms, and these are measured at both low and high-frequency rates. The electric power of individual devices is monitored using one smart plug per device.

The plug is an essential part of the proposed concept that facilitates automated DR participation for residential customers. It has a wireless communication module and a power measurement unit. It is assumed that the data communication between the smart meter and smart plugs can also be performed through wireless communication, such as WiFi, ZigBee, Z-Wave, etc. So, it can also be called a smart plug, which measures the electrical parameters of each appliance, such as voltage, current, and power. It sends this information to the smart meter to forward it to the utility/aggregator data center.

In Zhai et al. (2018), a very simple architecture of a smart home is presented as shown in Figure 1. The SHEMS unit is connected to each and every equipment through a smart plug. The smart plug can be used to monitor and control the usage of the equipment. The SHEMS unit also communicates with the gateway to receive the DR commands from the utility. The RESs are not considered in this architecture.
