The audio hardware and software configuration settings and the interview steps were as follows:The control variables used have been listed as follows: One vocal talent and one electric guitar player were invited for singing and music performance; under the same following conditions, all respondents took interviews in the same recording studio, using the same vocal microphone (Blue, Mouse), same electric guitar (Fender, Stratocaster) and the same audio signal preamplifier (SSL, Alpha Channel).A set of 1-in-4-out audio signal distributor (Radio Design Labs, RU-MLD4 distribution amplifier) was utilized for distributing the same vocal singing and electric guitar playing audio signals simultaneously, to record into four individual audio tracks in four individual same model audio-to-digital digital-to-audio converter interfaces (Avid, HD I/O) with four same individual model computers (Mac Pro, 2.7 GHz 12-Core Intel Xeon E5 processor, 16 GB memory), whilst the same model headphones (AKG, K240) and the same model monitor speakers (GENELEC, 1031A PM) were used for surveys (Figures 1 and 2).The audio recording session parameter settings were set to (a) record audio file type: Broadcast Wave Format (BWF) and (b) record track type: one single mono audio track, whilst four combination settings of bit depth/sample rate were applied in each Avid Pro Tools digital audio workstation as follows: Session A: 16-bit /44.1 kHzSession B: 24-bit /44.1 kHzSession C: 16-bit /48 kHzSession D: 24-bit /48 kHzThe respondents were asked to listen to the same vocal singing and the same electric guitar playing conveyed by the aforementioned headphones and monitor speakers.Four combination settings of bit depth/sample rate were used for each respondent as the independent variables to check for their opinions about the psychological satisfaction levels with audio dynamic range.All 50 respondents were asked to finish checking the questionnaires shown in Table 2. The statement question presented in the questionnaire was, ‘I am satisfied with the audio dynamic range of the playback audio signal.’

The experiments were performed on a Mac Pro desktop system, with two 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors and 64 GB of RAM. The segmentation took around 30 min for each of the MRI scans. More efficient automatic differentiation or optimisation techniques can be used to increase the computational efficiency of the prototype implementation.
