Integrating Technology, Data, and Applications in the Open Systems Environment
Published in Michael A. Mische, Reengineering, 2017
In the summer of 1993, CNR began laying out the design for its new system. It purchased two Hewlett-Packard HP 9000 UNIX-based minicomputers. The G40 model serves as the IS department’s development machine. The 170 model, the processing equivalent of a low-end mainframe with 30G bytes of storage space, acts as the applications server and connecting point for CNR’s 16 field offices. For its corporate data base, CNR chose Sybase SQL, which uses SQL, the de facto industry standard. To create desktop applications that run over the data base, it chose Powersoft Corp.’s PowerBuilder. The desktop environment was beefed up with the addition of more than 100 486 PCs. Printing capabilities were dramatically streamlined with a Hewlett-Packard F100 laser printer. The 100-pages-per-minute machine prints directly from the mainframe over the HP 9000, from the HP-UX servers, and from the Token-Ring LAN, on which employees use packaged and custom applications.

Because of the small dimensions of the diode laser, the light beam that comes out is highly divergent. The diode laser is placed at the focus of a paraboloid mirror to make the beam parallel. The IR radiation is directed to an absorption multipass white-type cell with a variable absorption path length fixed to 20.17 m. Then, the beam passes through a monochromator to select a transmission mode before being received by a detector formed of a ternary compound semiconductor HgCdTe. This detector is cooled to the temperature of liquid nitrogen to avoid the electron excitations due to thermal effects. At any time, the detected signal can be observed on an oscilloscope. The different types of spectra (e.g. empty cell scan, etalon fringes, low-pressure PH3 spectra, spectra broadened by different pressures of H2, etc…) recording can be monitored using a HP 9000 computer [22].

The chromatographic analyses were performed on a 250 mm × 4.6 mm id, C18 (ODS), Shimadzu, Japan, with HPLC. The samples of PTC6 were dissolved in chloroform and injected in column. The HPLC equipment comprised Hewlett–Packard (HP) 1050 Chem station software, an HP model 35900 interface unit, an HP 9000 series 300 computer. A UV detector was used with a sensitivity of 0.05 nm.
