HFR technologies have progressed rapidly over the last two decades. HFR has evolved from being considered purely a research topic to now being regarded as a viable and mainstream technology for enabling future broadband wireless communications in a range of applications that include last mile solutions and next-generation ultrabroadband data communications. Competing service providers of wireless and optical telecommunication networks have come to recognize the benefits of combining forces to create end-to-end heterogeneous network solutions that leverage their respective wireless access and fiber network infrastructures.

High frame rate (HFR) visualization is a common label for any display technology above 60 Hz. In the case of the conventional 2D displays, the commercial HFR screens are typically 144–240 Hz, mostly for gaming purposes. Such displays can reach 400–600 Hz, but nearly 1000 Hz is also possible. The commercial projectors for stereoscopic 3D visualization support 240 Hz, which means that they provide 120 Hz per eye.
