An in-air micro-PIXE analyzer was initially developed for elemental analysis in small biological samples [76]. The micro-PIXE system at TIARA consists of the light-ion microbeam line, a beam position control, and several X-ray detectors. The microbeam scans an interesting region of a target at the rate of several seconds per scan during measurement. The energy of the X-ray photons and the beam position are simultaneously recorded event by event and stored in list mode. The cross-sectional view of the in-air micro-PIXE system is shown in Fig. 4.20. The microbeam passes through a 5 µm thick polyethylene terephthalate membrane and irradiates the target in air. The transmitted beam is stopped in a beam dump made of glassy carbon.

The main challenges of a low-energy and high-power beam dump are the cooling and the stress problems. With a limited penetration depth, the power density is usually high for a beam with a current of several milliamperes. To limit the heat density to a reasonable level for conventional forced-convection water cooling, a long dump with a tilted or tapered stopping face is usually used. In addition, the mechanical stress due to differential thermal expansion should be well designed to remain within the nominal range of the dump core material. Another challenge is the shielding of radioactivity. For the 20-MeV proton beam, both the prompt and residual radiation doses will be considerable. To limit the level of activation, dump material should be chosen carefully.
