As a quick overview, shared folders in Windows operating systems are based on the proprietary Server Message Block (SMB) protocol. However, SMB only works between Windows-based computers. There is an SMB-compatible protocol, Samba, that uses open source software. Thanks to Samba, it is possible to communicate between Windows-based and Linux-based platforms. This is significant, since digital signage systems often operate with Linux servers serving Windows clients or vice versa.

The file layer uses file systems like NFS and CIFS to map the files into logical storage block addresses. NFS (Network File System) is an IETF standard used by UNIX systems, and the CIFS (Common Internet File System), also known as SAMBA or SMB, is used by Microsoft Windows. The file system will use a redirector to request or deliver files from remote domains using the local area network.

Code modularity is particularly important for OSS development since it facilitates coding activities among geographically distributed programmers. As a matter of fact, many of the OSS software such as Sendmail, Samba, Mozilla, and even Linux have been rewritten in a modular architecture to ensure successful development (Baldwin and Clark 2006; Fitzgerald 2004).
