System and Software Testing Strategies

The V-model defines testing activities with respect to the design activities and emphasizes the parallelism of testing, design, and coding (see Figure 6.1). Design and development begins with the production of the Product Requirements Document (PRD), which captures the requirements for the system or software from the customer’s or user’s perspective. The development team needs to analyze the PRD and create the functional specification documents, which are lower-level, more detailed requirements from which design and implementation can proceed. Based on the functional specifications, a system architecture is developed, detailed design is performed, and lower-level components, such as hardware or units of software code, are produced. At this point, when something tangible exists, testing can begin.
Apparel product developers: An exploration through the lens of work analysis

Once generated, the product developer sends the product requirements document to the factory partner. A typical experience shared was, “We’ll give them [factory partner] a week or so to go through all the details, and then we’ll have a video call so they can ask us any questions and just clarify anything before they start samples” (P8). Additionally, “the factory will come back to me with any questions that they have, and sometimes things change” (P1). Collaboration with external partners can promote success and a culture of innovation (Raajpoot & Sharma, 2021). The interchange between the product developer and factory partner also functions to verify the product requirements documents’ accuracy. “[T]hey’ll say, ‘Are you sure you want that logo in that color?’ And you’re like, ‘Oh no, it’s a typo’” (P8). Product developers value and respect the input they receive from factory partners.

The customer makes an enquiry about the feasibility of developing a manufacturing solution for one of its product families and submits product requirements document to the company’s Offer Technician which contains more or less details depending on each case. It is also at this point where the Offer Technician requests the customer to provide as much information as possible on the system peripherals, for which a specific checklist is used.
