Figure 2.2 shows the 3D-model of the ring with six fodo-cells exported from OpenSCAD. We see the dipole magnets and quadrupoles, all with their small pedestal, and the beam pipe in the sections in between magnets. This simple example illustrates how to determine the reference trajectory and where to put all the magnets and other elements. The curious reader is encouraged to add more, and nicer looking, elements as well as additional features to the MATLAB script or port it to other programing languages. As a side-note, we point out that OpenSCAD can export the model in formats that are compatible with “slicer” programs to prepare the model for 3D-printing.

There are many CAD/CAM applications with parametric capabilities, but in particular, the use of OpenScad1 is easy to integrate into automated design solutions as it uses a plain-text model with a command-line interface. The language is easy to understand and can be easily parameterised. It is a free multi-platform software that employs Constructive Solid Geometries (CSG), and extrusions of 2D CAD designs to compute the STL (stereolithography) files needed by the 3D printing slicing software, as can be seen in Figure 2 .
