IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is an Internet program that allows for massive multi-user live exchanges or "chat" sessions. It is commonly used in IRC connections, where a user runs a program (called a "client") to connect to a server on one of the IRC nets. Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is one of the most popular, text-based interactive service using TCP/IP on the Internet. An IRC client (program) gives a user the ability to exchange text messages interactively with other users around the world in real time. It is a multi-user, multi-channel teleconferencing system. This real-time, text-based chat process works on client/server architecture. IRC clients are computer programs that a user can install on their system. These clients communicate with chat servers to transfer messages to other clients. IRC clients and servers communicate by sending plain ASCII-formatted messages to each other over TCP. It is mainly designed for group communication in discussion forums, called channels, but also allows one-on-one communication via private messages as well as chat and data transfer, including file sharing. The only configuration allowed for IRC servers is that of a spanning tree where each server acts as a central node for the rest of the network it sees.

It is most widely used in Internet Relay Chat (IRC) connections. These types of botnets are legal and even useful for the maintenance of a smooth Internet user experience.
