IEC 60870-5 has been defined for different purposes, which are described in several parts of this standards family. The following list provides a brief overview of the application areas and the corresponding specifications: IEC 60870-5-101: This part of the IEC 60870-5 standards family describes general transmission protocols that have been developed for basic telecontrol tasks. It is mainly used for power system monitoring, control, and the associated communication for control and protection functions in electric power systems and its corresponding components.IEC 60870-5-102: It defines a protocol for the transmission of meter data in power systems. This part of the IEC 60870-5 standards family is currently not widely used. IEC 60870-5-103: It specifies a protocol for the interoperability of protection equipment/devices and the automation system in substations.IEC 60870-5-104: This part of the standard describes the extension of the IEC 60870-5-101 protocol specification for its usage in IP networks. The data transmission is accomplished by encapsulating IEC 60870-5-104 messages in TCP/IP packages.
Substation Integration and Automation

The IEC TC (Technical Committee) 57 is responsible for many of the advancements in open communications. IEC 60870 is no exception. This set of standards describes an open system for SCADA communications. The breadth of the IEC 60870 standards goes beyond the substation and includes teleportation and intercontrol center communications. In the substation, the following companion standards are of particular interest: IEC 60870-5-101—serial communications from a control center to a data concentratorIEC 60870-5-103—serial communications from a data concentrator or controller to a protection IEDIEC 60870-5-104—networked (LAN-based) communications from a control center to a data concentrator

The IEC 60870-5 is a general protocol definition developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission Technical Committee 57. The IEC 60870-5 is a series of standard documents that consists of base standard sections and companion standards. The companion standards are integrated by selections of sections taken from the base standards in order to acquire a specific configuration. This section will briefly describe the IEC 60870-5-101 profile, which is a messaging structure for RTU-IED communication.

IEC 60870-5-104 is an IP based standard protocol and IEC 60870-5-101 is a serial based standard legacy protocol. To get interoperability between IEC 60870-5-104 master/control centre and serial IEC 60870-5-101 RTU, it requires a gateway. Gateways do needful protocol conversion. Figure 9 shows the interoperability between IEC 60870-5-101 RTUs to and IEC 60870-5-104 master/control centre.
