Virtuality of Coordination
Published in Gamel O. Wiredu, Global Software Engineering, 2019
Thus far, connection and capitalization are the two concepts that define the synthesized idea of coordination by ICTs (informed by virtuality). In this synthesis, the materiality of technology and exploitation of geography come to the fore alongside the paradox of organization and management of information. The emphasis of exploitation of geography is predominantly due to the materiality of technology. The very practice of GSE in the face of geographical, temporal, and socio-cultural distances is testament to actual coordination by ICTs that distributed software engineers use to exploit places and spaces. The strongest concrete expression of geography exploitation is in dataspace appropriation (Chapter 6, Figure 6.4). A dataspace is a digital information space that enables free data movement and access for mutual awareness and responsiveness to externally changing requirements. It is appropriated by distributed software engineers in the spirit of connection and capitalization to achieve coordination. There is a strong reflection of the general and Leibnizian conception of space in a dataspace. There is also a strong reference to McLuhan’s total field awareness achieved by dataspace appropriation. General space conception and total field awareness pertain mostly to software product coordination across sites.
Industrial Dataspace for smart manufacturing: connotation, key technologies, and framework
Published in International Journal of Production Research, 2023
Jingwei Guo, Ying Cheng, Dongxu Wang, Fei Tao, Stefan Pickl
Dataspace, a concept raised before Big Data, has its advantage in the distributed data source, comprehensive analysis, pay-as-you-go, and smart service support, making it a proper system in smart manufacturing and realisable utilisation of industrial Big Data.
