Response: There are very less 3D file formats available for printing. Some of the most common formats are: STL: This is the highest versatile 3D model format, supported by all cutting tools.OBJ: The OBJ file configuration is also important – and supported by all major slicing tools. In contrast to STL, OBJ is able to store color and texture profiles; it’s likely to become more popular when multicolor printing starts.PLY: PLY, the Polygon file composition, was initially applied to store 3D scanned objects.3MF:3MF is a latest file format developed by Microsoft, Autodesk, HP and Shape Ways.
How Does 3D Printing Work?

The 3MF file format is a new format that is coming from Microsoft. The 3MF is another format that features color and a smaller file type without the cost of features that the STL file type has. The 3MF also is an easy file type to transfer and puts out quality manufacturability in products. The file type stems from the 3MF consortium made up of companies, such as Microsoft, HP, Autodesk, and other companies, that are getting involved in 3D printing. The 3MF is not widely used yet, but is seen as the file type of the future and as a contender to replace STL format in the long run.

3MF is an XML-based (“XML Technology” 2015) data format designed for realising AM, including information about materials, colours, and other information. Its structure is composed of two different parts: i) the 3MF core and ii) materials and properties. Geometry information in a 3MF file is composed of a mesh defined by a list of vertices that, – because of indices – makes defining triangles possible. There can be multiple meshes in the same file. As highlighted by Nassar and Reutzel (2013) one of the primary purposes of 3MF is to send the required information to a 3D printer from design software directly, and it is basically only a 3D printing format.
