A buried granite underlies the northern part of the Pennines between Alston and Stanhope, Co. Durham, where mineral veins are found injected into the sedimentary rocks of the area. After its presence was confirmed by a geophysical survey, the buried (Weardale) granite was reached by a boring at Rookhope in 1961, at a depth of 369 m.

Rogerley is located within the Northern Pennine Orefield, a 1,400 km2 block of Carboniferous aged (∼325 million years old) sedimentary rocks (limestones, sandstones, and shales). Mineralised veins were intruded into the Pennine Orefield during a single phase, sourced from the Weardale granite.
