The fact that the road surface is able to withstand the truck traffic has led to the hypothesis that it should be possible to construct a sealed road as on public roads. The maintenance regime for such a road is already in place. A sealed road should provide a life of at least 5 years, and probably longer, especially if modified binders are used. Special consideration must be given to the characteristics of the wearing course material to ensure that it fulfils the requirements of a base layer on a sealed road – a high clay content may attract moisture by means of capillary action, and this could lead to instability of the base, and cracking of the surfacing with resultant potholing. A dense graded crushed competent rock was used as wearing course in the example and this should meet the base material specifications.
Machine vision based waterlogged area detection for gravel road condition monitoring

Reasons for the limited model quality cannot be clearly identified and can have different origins. The visible disturbance of the training progress supports one origin. This behavior could be caused by the heterogeneous object appearance that is potentially amplified by the waterlogged object clustering. Also, the further rise of the objectness loss at a later point of the training additionally shows a problem when the training data capabilities are reached. A larger database of training data should therefore better consider the created large variety of object appearances. In comparison to the training data collected, an image database of 10,000 images containing 15,000 labels was trained with higher success for sealed road surface conditions (Chen et al. 2019) and thus shows the value that needs to be aimed for to achieve the best results.
