Mechanical connections

Mechanical connections refer to the use of hardware or other mechanical means to establish contact between two metals and maintain its structural integrity. However, this method can result in high connection loss and instability. The types of connectors can be generally classified as: compression, mechanical, wedge, make and brake (disconnect), and fusion. Compression connections use engineered tooling to crimp the connector to the conductor with high force, creating a permanent electrical joint. Mechanical connections employ hardware or similar mechanical means to create a contact between two metals and to maintain its integrity. Wedge connectors are made by driving the wedge between two conductors into the “C.” Fusion connections are made primarily by welding, soldering or brazing. A classification of connectors according to their design and functional operation is given below.

In mechanical connections, there is an obligation to create a hole, which causes stress concentration, and it leads to reduction of the structure fatigue life. In general, adhesive connection has advantages such as less stress concentration, more fatigue life, less weight and more corrosion resistance in comparison to mechanical connection. Adhesive connection has disadvantages including complicated inspection, non-detachable and complex pasting process (Baker, Rose, and Jones 2003).
