Bridge crane, as the name suggests, has a bridge mounted on an elevated track that can rotate in three axes. Gantry crane is an overhead crane that has a fixed support or gantry. Load lifting is done by a hoist that is connected to a trolley. Stacker crane has platform to place the load upon. This type of crane is especially useful for stacking operation at large height. Single girder crane is equipped with large metal beam or girder for hoisting the load. Both the number and type of girder vary. The number of girders for a double girder crane is two. Box girder crane is a type of bridge crane in which the girder is in the form of a box for safe carriage over longer distance.

There are four kinds of gantries, including a suspended gantry (see Figures 4 and 5), an internal gantry (see Figure 6), a tower gantry, and a cable gantry (see Figure 7). Table 2 presents the number of gantries with respect to different types of long span bridges as well as different kinds of gantries within the Honshu Shikoku Bridges (Sakamoto, 2002; Takatsu, Asakura, & Kagawa, 2008). As shown in this table, there are 152 gantries in total installed in the Honshu Shikoku Bridges. Among four types of gantries, tower and cable gantries can be removed and installed when it is necessary for inspection and maintenance. In fact, permanent tower gantries were installed on two cable stayed bridges, including the Hitsuishijima Bridge and the Iwakurojima Bridge, completed in 1988. However, the permanent tower gantries tended to be more costly than removable ones because the tower shaft needed to be equipped with guide rails. Because of that, a removable magnetic wheeled gondola had been developed.

Industrial cranes can be divided into three main types: bridge (gantry) cranes, tower (rotary) cranes and boom cranes. Gantry cranes have many applications, especially in transporting heavy loads in shipyards and construction projects, and also transporting hazardous material in nuclear power stations, nuclear installations, and petrochemical and fertilizer factories (Ramli et al. 2017).
