In order to improve road connections between the Asian and European parts of Istanbul, the Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project was developed. The project allows the crossing of the Bosphorus, this time, through an undersea tunnel also known as the Eurasia Tunnel (Avrasya Tüneli in Turkish). The same name also indicates all the tunnel-related underground works, which will be illustrated further on in this paper (Figure 1).

The Eurasia Tunnel Project (Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project) is a Build-Operate-Transfer project, which was awarded to Eurasia Tunnel Operation, Construction and Investment Inc. (Avrasya Tüneli İşletme İnşaat ve Yatırım A.Ş. – ATAŞ) in 2009. The Project, designed to ameliorate intensive traffic problems in Istanbul, aims to provide fast and safe travel on the Kazlıçeşme-Göztepe route and reduce the travel time from 100 to 15 minutes.
