The Business of Engineering
Published in Radovan Zdero, Practical Career Advice for Engineers, 2021
Consumables are materials, stationery, supplies, etc., that are fully used up during the course of an engineering project. This can also include user fees, repair fees, travel costs, utility bills (e.g., electricity bill, hot water bill), etc., that are incurred during the engineering project.
Minimizing Negative Long-Term Occurrences in Nanotechnology Development

There are three different categories of equipment that need to be maintained. The first is the safety equipment for the employees. Their training, or refresher course, for the proper usage needs to have a traceable record. This equipment needs to be inspected and verified for proper operation on a regularly scheduled basis. The testing and/or manufacturing equipment needs to have regular maintenance with replacement of parts and consumables as indicated by the supplier. This category includes both hardware and software as appropriate. The last category is the monitoring of the environment. The author is aware of one case where the particulate monitoring device had a high level of contamination in the laboratory air. The alarms sounded and everyone went into the nanomaterial contamination prevention procedure. Fortunately, the company also had monitors at other locations including outside the entrance to the facility. After the immediate check for contamination from the process yielded no source for the contamination, the other monitors were checked. The situation was caused by a very high level of springtime pollen and not an accidental release of nanomaterials. All of the monitoring records are stored.
Cost of Owning and Operating Construction Equipment

Consumables are those items that are required for the operation of a piece of equipment that literally gets consumed in the course of its operation. These include but are not limited to fuel, lubricants, and other petroleum products. They also include such things as filters, hoses, strainers, and other small parts and items that are used as the equipment is run.
Heuristic algorithms for inventory replenishment with perishable products and multiple transportation modes
Published in IISE Transactions, 2018

This work makes the following contributions to the existing literature. First, it provides a realistic model for inventory replenishment decisions for perishable products. This is important because many consumable products are perishable in nature and lose value with time. Second, the heuristic algorithms we develop may be integrated in existing Material Requirements Planning (MRP) systems to provide high-quality solutions in close to real time.
