Lubrication can be provided as internal or external lubrication. In internal lubrication, a lubricant (zinc stearate or stearic acid, 0.25–1% by weight) is mixed with the powder, increasing its compressibility and decreasing its green strength. After pressing, the lubricant is driven out by heat treatment (in air at 375−425°C), before sintering in a controlled atmosphere. In external lubrication, only the die walls are lubricated, avoiding the heat treatment necessary to drive out the lubricant, but this method does not provide the improved flow and compaction properties.

Table 1 lists the specifications of the SGP material. Bulk plates of SGP (area: 300 mm2, thickness: 30 mm) with Vf of 0, 20, and 50% were fabricated using the compression moulding process. Thermosetting phenolic resin was used as the matrix (Hitachi Chemical Co., Ltd.). The reinforcement was a short E-glass fibre with a length of 10 mm and a diameter of 10 μm (Nittobo Co., Ltd.). Compression moulding was carried out using a moulding machine with a mould temperature of 160 °C, a mould pressure of 20 MPa and a curing time of 250 s. Zinc stearate was compounded in order to improve the lubrication and wear resistance for the applications of belt pulley and gear products.
