Wastewater Treatment Operations
Published in Frank R. Spellman, Handbook of Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations, 2020
Total suspended solids and total volatile suspended solids concentrations of the mixed liquor (MLSS), the RAS, and WAS are routinely sampled (using either grab or composite samples) and tested because they are critical to process control. The results of the suspended and volatile suspended tests can be used directly or to calculate such process control figures as MCRT or food or mass ratio (F:M). In most situations, increasing the MLSS produces an older, denser sludge, while decreasing MLSS produces a younger, less dense sludge.

Weight of Ignited Solids, Filter, and SupportExample 11.5Problem: Using the data provided below calculate the total volatile suspended solids: Weight of dried solids, filter, and support = 1.6530 gWeight of ignited solids, filter, and support = 1.6330 gSample volume = 100 mLSolution:TVSS.=1.6530 g–1.6330 g×1,000 mg/g×1,000 mL100mL=0.02×1,000,000 mg/L100=200mg/LNote: Total fixed suspended solids (TFSS) is the difference between the total volatile suspended solids (TVSS) and the total suspended solids (TSS) concentrations. TFSS(mg/L)=TTS–TVSSExample: 11.6Problem: Using the data provided below, calculate the total fixed suspended solids: Total Fixed Suspended Solids = 202 mg/LTotal Volatile Suspended Solids = 200 mg/LSolution:Total Fixed Suspended Solids, mg/L = 202 mg/L − 200 mg/L = 2 mg/L

pH, total COD (tCOD), soluble COD (sCOD), total solids (TS), total volatile solids (TVS), total suspended solids (TSS), total volatile suspended solids (TVSS), total phosphorus (TP), salinity, electrical conductivity, alkalinity, and ammonium nitrogen (NH4+–N) parameters were investigated according to Standard Methods [25]. Phosphate (PO43–) and sulphate (SO42–) were determined by ion chromatography (Dionex Corporation, Sunnyvale, CA, U.S.A.) equipped with a conductivity detector and an analytical column (AS14A).
