Potassium dichromate

Potassium dichromate is a chemical compound represented by the formula K2Cr2O7. It is commonly used as an oxidizing agent for organic matter. It can also be added to hydrochloric acid to increase sensitivity. Potassium dichromate is moderately toxic on skin contact and ingestion, but highly toxic on inhalation. COD is defined as a measure of the amount of oxygen required for the chemical oxidation of organic matter in a sample, under acidic conditions, to carbon dioxide and water. The strong chemical oxidant most often used is potassium dichromate. All organic compounds, however, are not oxidized in this process: neither benzene, pyridine, or toluene are oxidized. Nor is ammonia oxidized, which of course by definition is not an organic compound.

Stock solution of 1000 ppm potassium dichromate was prepared by dissolving 2.828 g K2Cr2O7 in 1000 mL deionized water. Working solutions of concentration 100–500 mg/L were made by appropriately diluting stock solution in deionized water.
