Industrial Polymers
Published in Manas Chanda, Plastics Technology Handbook, 2017
High-molecular-weight polyisobutylene (PIB) is produced by cationic chain polymerization in methyl chloride solution at −70°C using aluminum chloride as the catalyst. Such polymers are currently available from Esso (Vistanex) and BASF (Oppanol).

The enhancement of the polymer matrix by physical or chemical means leads to a corresponding increase in interfacial bonding properties, and we will subsequently continue our research in this area. Polycarbonate-based TPU copolymers were used to enhance the adhesion to steel as in the work by Wongsamut[27] et al. 1,6-Hexanediol-based polycarbonate diol (HDPC) and Caprolactone co-polymerized 1,6-Hexanediol- based polycarbonate (CHDPC) were blended in the ratio of 60:40 wt% to obtain the soft segment. Hydrogen bonding generated in the mixed phase is considered to be an important factor in enhancing the peel strength. Peng[28] et al. organically modified montmorillonite as a reinforcement to obtain a polyisobutylene-organic montmorillonite pressure-sensitive adhesive with good adhesion properties, which has good prospects for application in the packaging industry.

Other polymeric sealants developed by researchers may be directly used or modified to serve in pavement joints and cracks, such as structural glazing silicone sealant (Rosendahl et al., 2019), high vacuum leak sealant made with anaerobic polymers (Kendall, 1982), polyurethane sealants containing rosin for disc regeneration (Carbonell-Blasco et al., 2013), alkoxysilane terminated polymers (Huber et al., 2016), phenol-formaldehyde resin-based adhesive (Kubit et al., 2018), aerospace sealants based on polythioether polymer (Clark & Cosman, 2003), polyethylene nanocomposite sealant (Zhang et al., 2009), photo-induced smart self-healing polyisobutylene based polymer for photovoltaics (Bag et al., 2016; Banerjee et al., 2015), etc.
