Nd:YVO4 is a crystal that is commonly used in high-power lasers, such as green laser pointers and fiber optic state lasers. It is a type of vanadate crystal that is doped with neodymium, and it emits light at wavelengths of 914, 1064, or 1342 nm. Birefringence in POFs was first reported in 2001 when Zhang and co-workers fabricated a long period birefringent grating in a multimode azobenzene doped PMMA POF using polarized light from a 532 nm Nd:YVO4 laser [56,57]. The phenomenon was attributed to the photo-induced alignment of the azobenzene units (Figure 3.5) allowing to achieve a maximum induced index change of 3 × 10−5 [56,58].

Figure 4 shows the thermal distribution of the Nd:YVO4 crystal, and the temperature gradient in the z direction. In Figure 4, we can see that the highest temperature in the centre of the pumped facet is 329.5 K. This results in a temperature rise of 40.5 K. The temperature in z direction decreases, which indicates that the thermal effect exists mainly at the front of the crystal.
