HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+δ′ superconductors exhibit the highest critical temperature among of the oxide superconductors. If these samples are prepared at ambient conditions, their superconducting transition temperatures are Tc≈135 K [1] and Tc≈165 K [2] under extremely high pressures. This peculiar property makes the Hg-1223 phase as a winsome material for its practical utilization. The volatility of the mercury oxide at high temperature is one of the problems for the practical application, respectively, do not appear possible for applications of this superconductive materials. In spite of this, an intense research activity until the present days doesn’t decrease [3–11].
Materials Used for General Radiation Detection

Mercury oxide has also been proposed as a room-temperature detection medium in view of its high density (11.14 g cm3) and favourable bandgap (2.2 eV). At normal pressures, HgO has two crystalline forms: an orange orthorhombic form known as montroydite, which is rarely encountered in nature, and a second, red hexagonal, form, which is analogous to the sulfide mineral cinnabar. Both are characterized by Hg-O chains in a zigzag pattern, which in turn are packed to form planar layers. At pressures above 10 GPa both structures convert to a tetragonal form. However, for radiation detection, HgO has several disadvantages – it is soft, sectile, very toxic and decomposes into mercury and oxygen on exposure to light or on heating above 500°C. Because of its toxicity, HgO is used in a limited number of applications – mainly as base in marine and porcelain paints, with graphite as a depolarizer in dry batteries and ironically in some skin ointments.
Ultrasonic and elastic properties of Tl- and Hg-Based cuprate superconductors: a review
Published in Phase Transitions, 2018
The Tl- and Hg-based superconductors are mostly prepared by using the solid-state reaction method. In order to measure the ultrasonic attenuation and sound velocity, the samples need to have high density and high purity. The Tl- and Hg-based superconductors are not easy to prepare with high enough density due to the volatility of thallium oxide and mercury oxide at high temperatures that are used as starting materials. In order to overcome this problem, for the Tl-based materials, the samples were ground and heated repeatedly and the thallium oxide lost in the previous heating was added in the subsequent heating to compensate for the thallium loss [39]. By this method, a high-density sample can be prepared where ultrasonic echoes are observable for attenuation and sound velocity measurements.

A discharge cell with an internal diameter of 4 mm and length of 350 mm made of molybdenum glass with a water-cooling jacket is embedded in the oxygen supply duct. Electrodes in the discharge cell are located at 300 mm distance from each other. The cell surface along with the output duct is coated with mercury oxide (HgO). Such coating (Rakhimova et al., 2005) leads to the decrease of concentrations of oxygen atoms and ozone molecules in the discharge products.

Further, due to the volatile nature of mercury, a group of researchers have employed soil thermogravimetry and found that Hg mainly exists in the form of sulfide. In addition, there were some forms of organic matter such as mercury binding, mercury chloride and mercury oxide (Shengming 2020).
