LEIS

Low-energy ion scattering (LEIS) is a surface-sensitive ion-based method used for analyzing the surface and near surface chemistry of materials. It provides information from the first mono-atomic layer of the materials and is uniquely surface-sensitive, providing useful information for understanding the relationship between surface composition and material properties. LEIS is used to determine the atomic composition of surfaces, but is sensitive only to the outermost atomic layer of the solid. LEIS is also known as ion scattering spectroscopy (ISS). It is similar to SIMS but its inspected depth is just the outer atomic monolayer. LEIS is sensitive to both structure and composition of surfaces. The material information such as relative positions of atoms in a surface lattice and the elemental identity of those atoms can be achieved by data collecting and deducing. This technique is an emerging method for SOC studies, especially in the research of segregation.44,45 For example, surface chemistry and oxygen surface exchange in LnBaCo2O5+δ air electrodes was investigated. LEIS was used for the analysis of the surface and near surface chemistry because it provides information from the first mono-atomic layer of the materials.44

The second ion-based method, LEIS is uniquely surface-sensitive that can provide useful information for understanding the relationship between surface composition and material properties (Cody et al., 2016).
