2,6-Pyridinicarboxylic acid (1.00 g, 5.98 mmol), 4,5-dimethyl-o-phenylenediamine (1.63 g, 11.97 mmol) were added to a flask and mixed in polyphosphoric acid (15–20 mL). The dean-stark apparatus was used to remove water from the reaction. After the reaction was refluxed for 24 h, cooled to room temperature and poured into an ice-water mixture. The mixture was neutralized with NH3 and the solid formed was filtered off, purified from methanol. 2,6-bis(5,6-dimethyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine ligand (L1) was obtained as beige colored powder (Scheme 1) (Yield: 1.85 g, 84%).[19]
