The Use of Small Particle Catalysts in Pursuit of Green and Sustainable Chemistry
Published in Ahindra Nag, Greener Synthesis of Organic Compounds, Drugs and Natural Products, 2022
Despite the mature technology status, cross-coupling reactions continue to be improved by broadening the scope of application, efficient catalyst development, and expanding the reaction’s practical utility. The importance of cross-coupling reactions has become recognized by the pharmaceutical/medicinal chemistry industry.146 Examples of current pharmaceutical products synthesized using cross-coupling technology are shown in Scheme 9.10. The importance of this attention was derived from a general query of the breadth of the synthetic reaction technology currently available.147

C–C coupling reactions are being used for preparation of various pharmaceutical products, bioactive compounds, and various organic compounds. Impressive results are obtained from C–C cross coupling reactions, if it is catalyzed by Pd and its complex with phosphine ligands.[18] These homogeneous phosphine complexes are sensitive to air and moisture in the environment and need to be operated in passive environments, and if homogeneous catalytic Pd is used ligand free, its recovery is very difficult after completion of the reaction. Therefore, heterogeneous catalysts for C–C cross coupling reaction are reusable and observed to be efficient catalysts. PdNPs based catalysts are observed to be highly efficient with various additives such as PdNPs supported on graphene oxide have been proved to be a good heterogeneous catalyst for the C–C coupling reactions.

Cross-coupling reactions are important methods to produce fine chemicals in organic synthesis. Suzuki-Miyaura reaction is one of the most beneficial and studied C-C bond forming reactions due to its use of non-toxic chemicals, substrate tolerance, green solvents, mild reaction conditions and easy separation of product from reaction media [31, 32]. Some excellent reviews were published on this area [33].
