All chemicals and solvents used for synthesis were of reagent grade, obtained commercially and used as received. Salicylaldehyde, 1,3-diaminopropane and anhydrous CuCl2 were purchased from Aldrich Chemicals. Hydrated copper(II) trifluoroacetate was prepared by the treatment of copper(II) carbonate basic hydrate, CuCO3·2Cu(OH)2 (AR grade, E. Merck), with trifluoroacetic acid (AR grade, E. Merck), followed by slow evaporation on a steam bath. It was then filtered through a fine glass frit and stored in CaCl2 desiccators.
