Colloid vibration current

Colloid vibration current (CVI) is a phenomenon that occurs when sound energy is applied to a system, resulting in the vibration of the colloid electric double layers and the creation of an electric field or current. This can be measured by applying a sound field and measuring the resultant electric current, which is referred to as the colloid vibration current (CVC). Basically there are two such techniques. The first consists in the generation of a pressure wave when an alternating electric field is applied to the suspension. It is called electrokinetic sonic amplitude (ESA) effect. The second one is reciprocal of the ESA phenomenon: a pressure wave of a suitable frequency produces an ac field in the suspension. It is called colloid vibration potential (CVP) or colloid vibration current (CVI).

The DT-1202 particle size and zeta potential analyzer were used to measure the ultrasonic attenuation and the colloid vibration current (CVI) of the particles in the suspension, was used where a peristaltic pump at flow rate about 300 mL/min to keep the suspension in circulation. The electroacoustic sensor was firstly calibrated with a standard sample (10 wt% SiO2 suspension), in which the zeta potential of the particles was −38 mV.
