Starting materials were synthesized following published methods; thus, thiobenzamide (1a) was prepared by sulfurization of benzamide with Lawesson’s reagent [44] substituted thioamides (1b-d) were obtained from corresponding carboxylic acids following reported methods [45] and unsymmetrical β-diketones (5a-h) were prepared in good yields by conventional Claisen condensation involving reaction of enolisable ketones with ethyl acetate in the presence of sodium ethoxide [46].

Replacement of the phenyl ring with a cyclopentadienyl group results in formation of “piano tool”-type complexes [CpM(CO)3] (M = Re or Tc) (see 18, Scheme 3) [52]. Rhenium complexes were prepared by acetylation of [CpRe(CO)3] using acetyl chloride. Then the base catalyzed Claisen condensation with aldehyde affords the chalcone-cyclopentadienyl complex. The class of ferrocenyl-chalcones has been discussed in many reviews [53–58].
