A significant proportion of people living in residential aged care are exposed to antipsychotic medication, with approximately one-third of residents receiving a medicine in this class at some point during their admission. Antipsychotic use is associated with significant adverse effects and an increased risk of premature death, especially for people with dementia. Studies of antipsychotic deprescribing in people living in residential care have produced mixed results (Van Leeuwen et al. 2018). Some trials have successfully withdrawn antipsychotics in participants without apparent adverse effect, but other trials have either failed to reduce antipsychotic use successfully, failed to show any benefit associated with cessation, or reported an increase in adverse outcomes associated with deprescribing (Van Leeuwen et al. 2018).

Antipsychotic medication, also known as neuroleptics is a class of psychotropics primarily manoeuvred for short- or long-term treatments of psychotic disorders (bipolar depression, delusions, paranoia, schizophrenia, etc.). Studies have revealed that Olanzapine, a novel atypical antipsychotic drug elicits a high response with low dosage on the patients suffering from psychotic ailments. It consists of a thieno-benzodiazepinyl structure and exhibits a similar in vitro binding profile with an atypical anti-psychotic agent; an FDA-approved drug, Clozapine [1,2]. According to the Biopharmaceutical Classification System (BCS), Olanzapine belongs to class II (low solubility, high permeability) cadre, and is highly effective in positive, negative, and cognitive symptoms for acute and relapsing schizophrenics. This drug is marketed under the trademark, Zyprexa by Eli Lilly and Company [3,4].

Behavioral and psychiatric conditions as signs and symptoms of anxiety, depression, asthenia, psychosomatic reactions, salutogenic responses, and so on, are observed in astronauts during space flight. Donepezil, Rivastigmine, and other antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, antipsychotics can be prescribed to treat cognitive behavior or Alzheimer’s-like conditions. Stress Management and Resilience Training for Optimal Performance (SMART-OP) is specially designed for astronauts to detect, prevent, and manage stress during space exploration. Besides these techniques, according to Eastern spiritual practices, especially Buddhism, mindfulness-based stress reduction or meditation practice might be a good self-management practice for them. Mindfulness meditation is an introspective psychological mind state that reduces mind wandering and focuses on increasing awareness with clear comprehension (Bishop et al., 2004; Healthline, 2019; NASA, 2016).
