Simple sequence repeat is abbreviated as SSR. SSR is also known as microsatellites or short tandem repeats (STRs). SSRs are repeating sequences of 2–5 base pairs of DNA. It is a type of Variable Number Tandem Repeat (VNTR). Microsatellites are typically co-dominant. They are used as molecular markers in STR analysis, for kinship, population and other studies. They can also be used for studies of gene duplication or deletion, marker assisted selection, and fingerprinting.

STR analysis was performed by DNA Diagnostics (Auckland, New Zealand) on genomic DNA harvested from iPSCs and fibroblasts. Tested loci included D8S1179, D21S11, D7S820, CSF1PO, D3S1358, TH01, D13S317, D16S539, D2S1338, D19S433, vWA, TPOX, D18S51, D5S818, FGA and the sex-typing marker Amelogenin.
