The IMViC tests were developed as a means of separating enteric bacteria, particularly the coliforms, using a standard combination of four tests. Each letter in IMViC represents a test. I = indole production from tryptophane.M = methyl red test for acid production from glucose.V = Voges-Proskauer test for production of acetoin from glucose.i = added for easier pronunciation.C = for the utilization of citrate as the sole carbon source.

Confirmatory tests were applied for candidate isolates of S. aureus and E. coli. The catalase test, the slide coagulase test, and the S. aureus latex agglutination assay were performed for candidate isolates of S. aureus while Triple Sugar Iron (TSI) agar and standard IMVIC tests (Indole, Methyl red, Voges-Proskauer, Citrate tests) were applied for candidate isolates of E. coli (Samarasekera and Abeygunawardena 2017; Thapaliya et al. 2017).
