Colectomy

Colectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of all or part of the colon. It can be performed using either a classical (open) or laparoscopic technique. The procedure can be classified into left- or right-sided colectomy depending on the location of the colon being removed. Military friendly fire (blue on blue) accidents powerfully illustrate the effects of expectations on perception.26 In northern Iraq in 1994, two American fighter planes erroneously shot down two of their own Black Hawk helicopters carrying 26 peacekeepers. They believed that only enemy aircraft would be present in the sector they were patrolling. ‘There is little doubt that what the F-15 pilots expected to see during their visual pass [i.e. enemy Hind aircraft] influenced what they actually saw’. One pilot said, ‘I had no doubt when I looked at him that he was a Hind. The Black Hawk did not even cross my mind when I made that visual identification’.26 An obvious surgical example relates to inadvertently dividing a structure that you do not expect to encounter because of where you think you are: the recurrent laryngeal nerve in thyroid surgery, common bile duct during gall bladder surgery or ureter during a hemi-colectomy.

They are Medicare national average rates and allowable charges of surgeon and hospital for colectomy (for details, see Colorectal Surgery Medicare Reimbursement Coding Guide, 2017). Row 7 provides the patient valuations: $20,000 and $50,000 for right-sided colectomies and $30,000 and $60,000 for left-sided colectomies. (See de Verteuil et al.
