The principle of bone conduction has been in use in hearing devices for many years. Surgical techniques and the devices themselves have continued to develop and have progressed rapidly since multiple companies entered the market and competition between them developed. Active middle-ear implants also have a role to play and the indications for many of these devices overlap. It is important that physicians offering hearing implants have an understanding of the available devices in order to counsel patients and provide them with the most suitable device.
