Upon analysis of the main cause of these accidents, only 3% were due to mechanical failure of the vehicle itself, usually a flat tyre; a defect on the road involved only 2% and a collision with an animal 1%. In the case of single vehicle accidents, the main cause was attributed to a human error (66%) of the driver, usually skidding and falling of the rider owing to overbreaking, or the wrong negotiation of a bend or excessive speed when doing so. Bad weather conditions were decisive only in 2% of the accidents.
