Robotaxi

A robotaxi is a vehicle designed for passengers rather than drivers, and is marketed to mobility fleet corporations for use as a driverless taxi. The automated driving system monitors and controls the speed and direction of the taxi, while passengers set their destination via a touchscreen or mobile phone. New mobility also brings the promise of lower transportation costs. Labor costs make up nearly two thirds of the cost to operate public transit (American Public Transportation Association, 2018) and over 40 percent of the operating cost for trucking (American Transportation Research Institute, 2017). Private vehicles inherently include the cost of the driver's time, which could be reclaimed for more productive uses. The costs to use robotaxi services in the future are uncertain and debatable, but UBS forecasts costs could be 80 percent less than what ride-hailing platforms cost today, making them significantly cheaper than owning a private car for most people (UBS Group 2017).

We detailed the questionnaire design and procedure in Experiment 1a. After a general introduction of the online survey, we used the participants’ parity of the last digit of their cell phone number to assign them to one of the two conditions randomly. We organized the questionnaire as follows. Participants read an introduction of Robotaxi: “With technological progress, taxis can be driverless driving, that is, no human driver on board. On all roads and in all conditions, the automated driving system completely monitors and controls the speed and direction of taxis. Passengers set a destination via a touchscreen or their mobile phone. Assume that the safety performance of the current driverless taxis is equal to the average performance of human drivers.”
